Daniel Browning

Daniel Browning is a Bundjalung and Kullilli journalist, radio broadcaster, documentary maker, sound artist and writer. He worked for the ABC for 30 years, most recently as Editor for Indigenous Radio and producing and presenting The Art Show for ABC Radio National.

Daniel presented Awaye! for many years, a Radio National staple which surveys contemporary Indigenous cultural practice across the arts spectrum. Daniel is celebrated as a pioneer for his fiercely perceptive commentary and values-driven practice, and across the breadth of his career, has sought to elevate public commentary and criticism on Aboriginal arts and culture.

Central to Daniel’s work has been his talent as a conversationalist. His first book, Close to the Subject: Selected Works, won the 2024 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing and was shortlisted for the 2024 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Indigenous Writers’ Prize.
