Strength, Resilience, Power with Amani Haydar. Hosted by Fiona Murphy.

  • The Carrington Hotel 15-47 Katoomba Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

Amani Haydar's world and what she knew of her family was obliterated when her mother was killed by her father in a brutal act of domestic violence. Instead of crumbling in grief, Amani drew strength from this trauma and has written the deeply personal, The Mother Wound, a story of female resilience, the power of motherhood and the grace that can come from understanding the wounds of trauma. A lawyer, feminist and artist, Amani works as an advocate for women's health and safety, helping survivors to find their voices. In conversation with Fiona Murphy.

Amani Haydar’s memoir The Mother Wound was published in July 2021, winning several awards including the 2022 Multicultural NSW Award and the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. In 2018, Amani’s self-portrait titled 'Insert Headline Here' was a finalist in the 2018 Archibald Prize.

Fiona Murphy is an award-winning deaf writer whose work has appeared in The Guardian, The Saturday Paper, Kill Your Darlings, Meanjin, among many other publications. Her memoir, The Shape of Sound, explores her experiences with deafness.
