When in doubt, make ‘em laugh! The best satire edges towards the absurd while remaining grounded in human experience, and the best humour either punches up, or demonstrates an author’s capacity to laugh at themselves. In The Hiding Place and Kill Your Boomers, Kate Mildenhall and Fiona Wright achieve both, while offering plot and character- driven page turners that keep readers guessing to the very last page.
Tackling class, real estate, privilege, marriage, parenthood and accidental murder, these imaginative writers deliver satire in spades, without ever losing compassion for their characters. Don’t miss their wit and critique, in a conversation led by incisive literary mind Beejay Silcox.
Kate Mildenhall is the author of Skylarking, The Mother Fault, The Hummingbird Effect and The Hiding Place. In 2024 she released a children's book To Stir With Love, illustrated by Jess Racklyeft. For six years she co-hosted The First Time podcast, interviewing hundreds of writers.
Fiona Wright is a writer, editor and critic from Sydney. Her first book of essays, Small Acts of Disappearance, won the 2016 Kibble Award and the Queensland Literary Award for non-fiction, and her poetry collections are Knuckled and Domestic Interior. Kill Your Boomers is her debut novel.
