What a character pays attention to, is attached to, or neglects can help a writer show the reader who the character really is. Learn the difference between objects, artefacts and talismans, and explore examples from fiction and non-fiction that allow you to better understand these ideas. Objects can carry emotional weight in a story, and this workshop will explore how to write about them in a way that adds rich, meaningful texture without drowning the reader in distracting detail.
Experienced teacher and mentor Eleanor Limprecht will facilitate experimentation and offer you new ways to think about character, with writing exercises that allow you to implement theory in practice, and opportunities to share work in a positive and supportive space.
Dr Eleanor Limprecht is the author of five novels, most recently Cul-de-Sac, which is published by Ultimo Press. Her novels have been shortlisted for the ALS Gold Medal, longlisted for the Voss Literary Prize and awarded the ASA Blake-Beckett Trust Scholarship.
