Dominic Hoey
Dominic Hoey is a poet, author and playwright based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. His novels Iceland and Poor People with Money were both New Zealand bestsellers, with Iceland longlisted for the 2018 Ockham Book Awards. His short story ‘1986’ won the Sunday Star-Times Short Story Award.
Dominic is the founder of Learn to Write Good, a creative writing program that supports people with limited access to formal education. He teaches across Aotearoa and works with rough sleepers, rangatahi in the justice system, and people with mental health and addiction issues. He co-founded Dead Bird Books, a small press publishing marginalised writers, with 13 titles released to date, two of which were shortlisted for the Ockham NZ Book Awards. He has been awarded international and local residencies, most recently at Varuna, the National Writers’ House. His work blends humour, grit and empathy, reflecting the lived realities of working-class life in Aotearoa.
