Make your historical fiction project a bit – or a lot – stranger, with novelist, essayist and Managing Editor at Island magazine, Jane Rawson.
Whether you’re writing a novel set in the jazz bars of 1930s New York, a short story set in a cotton mill during the Industrial Revolution, or a multi-generational epic inspired by your own ancestors, there’s always room to make things weirder.
In this playful and thought-provoking workshop, Jane Rawson invites you to break with tradition and surprise your readers by bending the rules of historical fiction.
You will examine how established writers have combined research and fantasy, consider the ethics of rewriting history, and develop strategies for building believable alternative worlds. You’ll also experiment with narrative voice and its impact on authenticity.
This is a hands-on workshop with both thinking and writing exercises, but there’s no pressure to read your work out loud unless you want to.
Jane Rawson is the award-winning author of novels A History of Dreams, From the Wreck and A Wrong Turn at the Office of Unmade Lists, a novella, Formaldehyde, and the non-fiction books The Handbook: Surviving & Living with Climate Change and Human/Nature. Her essays have been published widely.
