THE POETICS OF PLACE WITH SARA M SALEH

  • Workshop Room @ The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre 30 Parke Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

Join celebrated author, poet and human rights lawyer Sara M Saleh for an exploration of the poetics of place.

This generative writing workshop begins with the belief that poems are everywhere: waiting in a line of text, a line break, or in line for a coffee - and that every place we inhabit leaves its mark on the lines we write.

Together, we will practise reading as an act of entry, learning to slip into a poem, or to build a portal, when we can’t find a door. Our explorations will invite language to carry the textures, histories, and geographies that shape us; to surprise us, shift form, and be dismantled and reassembled in ways that alter its meaning. Through shared exercises and experiments, we will stretch our craft toward the unexpected, making room for poems that take us - and our sense of place - somewhere we did not plan to go.

Sara M Saleh is the daughter of migrants from Palestine, Egypt, and Lebanon, living on Bidjigal land. Sara’s first novel Songs for the Dead and the Living was shortlisted for the 2024 NSW Premier's Awards, and she made history as the first poet to win both the 2021 Peter Porter Poetry Prize and the 2020 Judith Wright Poetry Prize. Her first poetry collection The Flirtation of Girls/Ghazal el-Banat won the Anne Elder Poetry prize, and was shortlisted for the Mary Gilmore Award and the ALS Gold Medal in 2024.
