“What happens to the marriage plot in the era of monsterf*cking novels?” writes Olivia Murphy for the Sydney Review of Books. From interspecies romance to the rising divorce rate, there are more than a few challenges to our popular conception of marriage as the end goal of a classic love story.
Join Kris Kneen and Andrew Pippos, as much passionate readers as they are writers, for a discussion of the role marriage plays in contemporary literature, popular conceptions of ‘high’ and ‘low’ art, and how their own work engages with love and marriage in interesting ways.
Kris Kneen is an award-winning author of fiction, poetry and non-fiction. They have been shortlisted for many awards including the prestigious Stella Prize. Their poetry collection Eating My Grandmother won the Thomas Shapcott Prize. Their latest book Rite of Spring is published by Transit Lounge.
Andrew Pippos is the author of The Transformations and Lucky's. He lectures in creative writing at the University of Technology Sydney.
Olivia Murphy writes about Jane Austen, the history of the English novel, and occasionally some of the weirder aspects of popular culture. She has researched and taught at the Universities of Oxford and Sydney and at Murdoch University in WA.
